Glorious Goodwood: a look at some of the week’s big races
Jul 14 2016
The Qatar Goodwood Festival, famously known as Glorious Goodwood, gets underway on July 26th and horse racing fans from all over the world will be excited at the prospect of watching the best flat racing thoroughbreds in the business go up against each other in a number of prestigious races.
From the Qatar Lennox Stakes on the opening day to the world famous Stewards Cup, Glorious Goodwood is THE place to be this month. We took a look at just a few of the week’s major races and give our thoughts on who could emerge victorious at this year’s Qatar Goodwood Festival.

Look no further than HOME OF THE BRAVE in this one. While GIFTED MASTER could push him close if the weather suits, Home of the Brave has been imperious this summer and has won four of his five starts over 7 furlongs. Whether James Doyle or William Buick gets the ride, one thing’s for sure: he will be VERY difficult to beat towards the line; particularly if he gets his nose ahead approaching the final furlong.
This is widely regarded as the biggest race of the opening day and the best jockeys, owners and trainers will all be eager to get off to a winning start. The full listing of runners and riders is yet to be announced and punters can keep up with the latest news via Bookies.com – with only three weeks until the meeting gets underway, it won’t be long before final declarations are announced.
As of July 12th, this looks set to be a head-to-head clash between GALLILEO GOLD and THE GURKHA. Both horses are Grade One winning thoroughbreds and this could be the race of the week if they perform at their very best. Galileo Gold won at the festival last year but The Gurkha is the new kid on the block. And with the Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore combination, it would be foolish to rule the three-year-old out.
Bookies.com writer Andy Bell gave his thoughts on the action at Yarmouth earlier this month and performed well despite adverse conditions. On that day, it was very heavy under foot and Bookies can keep you updated on the latest weather news as well as horse racing betting news and information. It is well worth keeping track of the conditions as BELARDO could prosper from rain whilst others prefer it dryer.
MINDING is perhaps the best flat racing filly in the business right now and Ryan Moore can lead her to victory on the final day of the meeting. She is currently priced at below EVS and it is hard to see her slipping up in this one. As previously mentioned, the O’Brien-Moore duo have a lethal strike rate and they will view this as one of their bankers for the festival.
Right now, many believe that ALICE SPRINGS may be the biggest threat to Minding and it is easy to see why. Alice Springs is a talented prospect but she won’t have Moore on her; which may tempt punters to look elsewhere. She is another of Aidan O’Brien’s incredible fillies and some backers will be looking to back his two starlets in a dual forecast. After all, they are both at the top of the field...
