Simone Manuel took a silver medal in the 50m freestyle at 9:03 p.m. ET and anchored the 4x100m medley relay to a gold medal at about 9:50 p.m. ET on Saturday night. The 23 USAgold medals thus far in Rio were won in swimming (15), gymnastics (2), track and field (2), cycling (1), judo (1), rowing (1), and shooting (1). The collective medal was the United States' 1,000th gold medal at the Summer Olympics as the country became the first nation in history to accomplish the feat.
In fact, the U.S. Swim Team's lead is utterly decimating: The runner up for Olympic medals in swimming is Australia, which won 10 total medals for its 2016 swimming performance.
The medal that got the United States there came in swimming, courtesy of the women's team in the 4x100-meter relay. As of the writing of this story, the United States has 24 gold medals, 18 silver and 18 bronze, giving the country a clear cut number one ranking with 60 total medals. Bill Mallon, official Olympic historian, and Gracenote, an global sports data company, had disagreed on the exact number of medals the US had won. And the relay win was No. 23 in Rio, so by the USOC's count that made it official. It marked the U.S.' second straight gold in the event.
"One thousand gold medals is a remarkable achievement made possible by the culture of sport that is the fabric and foundation of Team USA", said USOC CEO Scott Blackmun.
Overall, the US has 2,453 total medals, including 769 silver and 684 bronze. As a result, the 526 American athletes wrecked the competition, winning 78 gold medals and 239 medals overall.
Beyond the unique circumstances of those two Olympics, the Americans have had most of their best showings recently. 1000 gold medals is just the beginning.
