Rio Olympics 2016: Schooling beats childhood hero Phelps for Singapore's first Gold

Phelps' baby boy's Olympic style is on point

Joseph Schooling of Singapore, the surprise victor of the men's 100-meter butterfly, was delighted to share the podium with silver medalists Phelps, Chad le Clos and Laszlo Cseh, three swimmers who "changed the face of our sport".

Friday night's final will be Schooling's first Olympic final, with the 21-year-old the first male swimmer from Singapore to qualify for an Olympic swimming final.

Joseph Schooling clocked 50.83 seconds, while South Africa's Chad Le Clos had the second fast time of 51.43 on Thursday.

America's latest swimming star won the 800m by a distance in a time of 8min 04.79sec, beating her own world record of 8:06.68 set in January.

Phelps clinched victory in the 200-meter butterfly on Tuesday night, holding off the challenge of silver medalist Masato Sakai of Japan and Hungary's Tamas Kenderesi, who placed third.

Known at home for smashing national records and taking multiple titles in regional competitions, Schooling had held the hopes of Singapore, a Southeast Asian island nation of less than six million, which had only won two silvers and two bronzes since it joined the Olympic fold in 1948.

Phelps' final event of the 2016 Rio Olympics - the 4x100m medley relay - will take place on Saturday, August 13. "It's been a hell of a career", Phelps told reporters, while acknowledging the strain on his 31-year-old body. "I'm just honored and privileged to have the chance to race alongside him".

In the blink of an eye, Ervin went from one end of the pool to the other in a furious dash, edging the defending Olympic champion, Florent Manaudou of France, by a mere hundredth of a second. I think with a different goal, he's going to come back and push his limits.

"It is an incredible feat, to compete among the world's best, stay focussed, and emerge victorious", Lee said in a Facebook post.

Fellow American Nathan Adrian claimed bronze a further 0.07 seconds back.

"I don't train for this event so it was nice to be top 16".

He said: "I think my fly is looking smooth". "I tried to keep it all under control, but there's been a lot of tears these last 24 hours".
