Marietta National Cemetery hosted Wreaths Across America, a holiday wreath-laying ceremony to honor the nation's veterans, on Saturday.
"We are honored to partner with this awesome organization to lay wreaths on our local heroes' graves at Wildwood Cemetery, and present a ceremony to commemorate National Wreaths Across America Day", said Jane Schramm, president of the regional chapter.
Once a wreath was placed on a headstone, the veteran's name was said aloud to remember them.
Chris Buckley will have a story on KOLO 8 News Now this evening. "They create a focus around veterans, honor, tradition and our constitutional values".
Maine State Police Detective Chad Lindsey pauses at a friend's grave in Section 60 as he carries a wreath to be placed at another grave, during Wreaths Across America at Arlington National Cemetery, Saturday, Dec. 17, 2016 in Arlington, Va. Organizers estimate more than 245,000 wreaths were placed at graves throughout the cemetery. "This event is a wonderful way to bring awareness and patriotism to Williamsport". We came back to place a wreath on his grave. "I have others who just do it for the community service and they ask 'What can we do for them?'"
More than 500 wreaths are expected to be laid.
Saturday's program also included the Stephen Holston Chapter Sons of the American Revolution color guard, music by students from Montgomery Ridge Intermediate School in Maryville and the presentation of wreaths by each branch of the military. "They work well with veterans because they know that there should be some sort of partnership because they want to fill their shoes", Torres said.
