Elina Svitolina tops Wozniacki, breaks into WTA top 10

Hsieh Su-wei advances to doubles final in Hungary

Angelique Kerber's hopes of reclaiming the world number one ranking were dashed by a semi-final defeat to Elina Svitolina at the Dubai Tennis Championships, but Caroline Wozniacki continued her fine form to reach the final.

The seventh seed then gave a tennis masterclass to win her first Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships title on Saturday. Her ranking had been on an upward trajectory each year and she was already guaranteed to be No11 by the tournament's end-into the top 10 should she win.

"I've dreamed for all my life to be in Top 10", Svitolina said after the final, where she defeated Caroline Wozniacki in straight sets.

Had Kerber won the tournament, she would have retaken the world number one spot she held after winning the US Open in September, until Serena Williams wrestled it back in claiming Australian Open glory last month. In her first main draw matches of 2017, the California teenager has now beaten three top-50 players in three days.

Elina Svitolina was instead the protagonist of an almost-perfect match. Ana is a tough opponent, she's going for it.

A single break of serve in the sixth game put the Ukrainian in the driver's seat in the first set. I'm really happy with the performance.

Appropriately it was a winning backhand into the corner that won the match, 6-2, for the young Svitolina's first Premier title.

"She's a player that mixes the pace up quite a bit", Wozniacki said of Sevastova. However, some vicious returning and another slotted backhand victor gave Svitolina two break-and set-points. She has a losing record against both potential finalists: Kerber leads 8-5, while Svitolina leads 1-0.

"It was really fun for me to see what the highest level is (like)", Bellis said.

Davis now has a match that appears to be fairly open as she will face Svitolina in the next round.
