While other tokens have been phased out and added throughout the years, both the iron and the thimble were included in the game from the start.

As part of the brand's "Monopoly Token Madness" campaign, more than 4 million people voted to decide which eight tokens should be part of the next iteration of the game.

Sewing fans, hold on to your thimbles.

Hasbro will announce the new tokens on March 19, with options including various smiley face emojis, a cellphone, and aviator sunglasses.

Kathy Merlock Jackson, a professor of communication at Virginia Wesleyan College, said it's common for makers of popular games to update their pieces to create conversation.

No word yet on which new token will replace the majestic thimble, but it will, undoubtedly, be garbage.

The current tokens that will remain are: Scottie Dog, Car, Battleship, Hat, Boot, Wheelbarrow and Cat.

"But it isn't as relevant to modern America - unlike other older tokens like the auto or boot".

The thimble's demise follows that of the similarly symbolic tossing of the iron in 2013 in favor of a cat, nature's laziest animal. Some of the new tokens that were up for consideration this year included a penguin, rubber duck, TV, watch, and an emoji of Mr. Monopoly. The game will include the chosen game pieces and will hit the shelves this August.
