A quick look at UC Davis-NC Central in the NCAA Tournament

NC Central to face UC Davis in NCAA tournament play-in game

In their first ever NCAA Tournament game, UC Davis defeated North Carolina Central 67-63 in Dayton, Ohio.

In North Carolina Central's first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2014, the Eagles had the ball with 38 seconds remaining in regulation and chance to make history. UC Davis is one of the rare teams that has the distinction of shooting fewer threes than Kansas, although they shoot a not bad 35 percent from deep.

Les is in his sixth season at UC-Davis, which will make its first Division I appearance in the NCAA Tournament after claiming the Big West Tournament.

- Kansas basketball coach Bill Self said Thursday that he did not expect guard Josh Jackson to elevate his game in an attempt to atone for recent mistakes that cost Jackson a game and the Jayhawks a victory heading into the NCAA Tournament.

With less than 24 hours before the Jayhawks tip off against UC Davis, those fans won't need to wait that much longer. "We're proud of how far he came throughout his year and we're just focused on today and not really anxious about anything off the court".

Added KU junior Devonté Graham: "Coach just tells us to play free".

"We really try not to pay attention to anyone else's expectations", said Josh Jackson, the Big 12's freshman of the year. "We got some really good practice in". "But if we end up playing them, then it's all business".

"They (Aggies) will be fired up to play", Jackson said. And we're just going to continue to fight, to keep this story going. He led Bradley to the Sweet 16 in 2006. I don't know that they (Jayhawks) have used it as motivation because I don't think it should be motivation, but I also don't think it should be an excuse and a distraction.

"Being freshmen, a year ago we didn't know what to expect coming into the game. If I can give them a snapshot of what they're going to experience and so they can kind of mentally prepare so they're not surprised".

The counter to the early Aggie offensive explosion, a switch to a 1-3-1 zone, actually worked in NC Central's favor, as it created turnovers, got out in transition, and changed the game to the Eagles' style of play.

Just as the Aggies looked to seize the moment, the Eagles forced three consecutive turnovers out of a half court 1-3-1 trap, getting them right back into the contest. I think our guys have heard enough and I think it's water off their back in a lot of ways, as far as a distraction goes. We got to practice and I found out we weren't even playing today. They haven't impressed in wins, muscling them out, but coach Les can be proud of their resilience. "A lot of people have been coming out of nowhere and congratulating me and sending me friend requests on Facebook and stuff like this".

"I have an easy sell when I sit in a living room of a recruit, because we were living in IL at the time".

"But I feel we've got a good grasp on it and we've got a lot of things figured out", Jackson added.

"It's been exciting", UC Davis' Brynton Lemar said. I'd love to be able to get (Former Oklahoma State) Coach (Eddie) Sutton to the game, if that's possible, but I don't know if that's going to be possible.
