Multiple people were injured during an ax attack at a train station in Dusseldorf, Germany on Thursday, the Associated Press reported.

The attack happened around 9 p.m. local time at the main train station in Düsseldorf, according to federal police in Germany.

German daily newspaper Rheinische Post reported a suspect had been apprehended, but police had given no details about the identity, motive or how many were injured.

Police are investigating whether other people were involved in the attack.

Photos on social media show a person lying on the floor as police tape and officers cordon off part of the stations.

In June previous year, police arrested three Syrian men over an alleged plan to use guns and suicide vests in an Islamic State attack in Dusseldorf.

A police spokesman said more suspected attackers are believed to be at large.

This is a developing story.
