Trump's NASA Budget Eliminates Crewed Mission to Asteroid

Another mission to get the kibosh is the proposed Europa lander.

Of course, this is just the presidential proposed budget. "We all have to be careful not to jump too high".

Instead, those cuts will come from funding that goes to towns, cities, states, and tribes in order to help them anticipate and prepare for the impacts of climate change.

If it can't, children - who are our only hope at creating a better world after this grease fire USA administration - will suffer most. Some saw it as targeted retaliation for some of the climate research NOAA has conducted. The Budget focuses on missions that were determined to be more important by the science community.

"We encourage Congress to act in the nation's best interest and support sustainable funding for federal research and development - for both defence and non-defence programmes - as it works to address the 2018 budget". "It's very concerning", McEntee said, citing the necessity of such satellites for giving advance warning of major storms, floods and drought, and other weather and climate issues that can have major economic impacts on farming, energy and infrastructure.

For months, activists warned the White House could gut climate programs and data through draconian budget cuts.

The same scenario would play out at many other science agencies if this budget blueprint is implemented, Hourihan and others note.

If you're a PhD scientist at a research university and your town gets flooded or its drinking water poisoned, you can always teach and publish papers from an office in an academic building somewhere safer. 'The NSF budget tends to follow the discretionary budget fairly closely, so if the administration is proposing a 10% reduction or more for non-defence discretionary spending, it seems reasonable that the NSF would be cut as well, ' says Matt Hourihan, who heads the AAAS's R&D budget and policy programme. The budget proposal justifies this move by explaining that the agency's education office has never managed to be effective so they aren't exactly yanking education funding so much as allowing NASA's Science Mission Directorate to be solidly in control of the agency's educational programs.

Trump is not the only President in recent history that has not been generous to the space agency.

Perhaps the biggest changes would be felt in NASA's science programs. And the proposal axes four NASA Earth-science projects: The Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem (PACE) satellite, which would monitor Earth's oceans and atmosphere; the Orbiting Carbon Observatory-3 (OCO-3), which would track atmospheric carbon-dioxide levels from the International Space Station (ISS); the Climate Absolute Radiance and Refractivity Observatory (CLARREO) pathfinder, another instrument that would be installed on the ISS; and, finally, the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR).

"Overall science funding is stable, although some missions in development will not go forward and others will see increases", Lightfoot said in the statement. "Having real life NASA resources means that the kids are essentially learning directly from NASA which makes it all the more exciting". And its lower bottom line for NASA will make it harder for the agency to dig out of the rut it's been stuck in since the end of the space shuttle program in 2011.

Industry stalwarts like Boeing and Lockheed Martin were expected to benefit from this new initiative, but smaller firms like Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) would also be vying for NASA dollars.

Donald Trump is making good of his campaign promises as in his first federal budget for 2018, he has successfully shifted focus from Earth research and explorations to missions to Mars, Moon and Jupiter's ice covered satellite Europa.
