Hydrogen fuel cell cars creep up _ slowly _ on electrics

Honda Unveils Clarity Plug-In Models at New York Auto Show

Before we get to the two new Clarity models, we learned a little more about upcoming hybrid Honda first hinted at during the Detroit Auto Show in January.

As far as the U.S. market is concerned, the Clarity PHEV is second only to the Chevrolet Volt in terms of electric range - but it's a larger vehicle that boasts five seats. When the battery drains, a 1.5-liter Atkinson cycle four-cylinder gas engine kicks in to generate electricity and keep the vehicle motoring for an additional 288 miles (463 km), for a total estimated range of 330 miles (531 km). Unlike the Prius, the Clarity is available with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. That would contribute to its larger goal of making two-thirds of its vehicles sold globally electric by 2030. When electricity and gasoline join forces, the Clarity boasts a total driving range of over 330 miles and it returns an EPA-estimated 105 MPGe.

The Clarity allows Honda to invest in a single platform carrying three different approaches to electrification and enables the company to adjust its product mix to adapt to market developments. Honda has set a target of selling 75,000 Clarity cars - fuel cell, hybrid, or all-electric - annually, starting next year. Drivers can manage battery power and ride with three primary driving modes: Normal, Econ and Sport. Being a hybrid, it will offer drivers greater flexibility in fuel choices. Honda is aiming for 120/102/111 mpg-e EPA numbers.

Honda views fuel cells as the ultimate zero-emissions vehicle technology and the Clarity Fuel Cell offers green early adopters the latest technology to be on the forefront of "what's next".

Alongside the PHEV, Honda also revealed the new Clarity Electric - doing away with the fuel cell and range-extenders of its stablemates entirely to fully embrace the battery EV method. Conrad also said that over the next two years, more than half of the new models Honda introduces in the United States will be "electrified vehicles of one kind or another". Lessees can also apply for the State of California $5,000 rebate. The Clarity Fuel Cell is available in three colors: Bordeaux Red Metallic, White Orchid Pearl and Crystal Black Pearl. Lease includes Roadside Assistance, up to $15,000 of hydrogen fuel, and up to 21 days Avis luxury rental vehicle.

"Our outlook for fuel cells is bolstered by the tremendous initial reaction we have received from our customers about their experience with the Clarity Fuel Cell and from media who've already had the opportunity to drive it", he argued.

The pure-electric Clarity Electric offers only 80 miles of total driving range. Honda's rosy forecast is encouraging, given how many cars it sells.
