Major League Baseball notes: Blue Jays put Donaldson on DL with sore calf

The Orioles (6-2) are the early leaders in the American League East. A spinal board was used for support and he was taken off the field on a golf cart.

Seeking to spark his offense, Toronto manager John Gibbons moved outfielder Ezequiel Carrera into the leadoff spot and dropped Devon Travis, who came in hitless in 23 at bats, to ninth.

Before the game, Toronto put slugging third baseman Josh Donaldson on the 10-day disabled list with a sore right calf.

Zach Britton allowed one run and three hits in the ninth but picked up his fifth save of the season and his 54th straight converted save opportunity overall.

A foul ball off the bat of the Orioles' Mark Trumbo directly hit him in the bottom part of his mask.

Plate umpire Dale Scott sustained a concussion when he was hit in the mask by a foul tip during a game between Baltimore and Toronto on Friday night.

The Blue Jays, last in the majors with 24 total runs, saw Donaldson get hurt on an RBI double.

Gausman (1-0) allowed two walks and struck out three in his third start of the season.

"I think it's just a reminder of the challenges physically and the risk taken every night by catchers, umpires and that one, I know Dale had some concussions past year", O's Manager Buck Showalter said after the game (via the Baltimore Sun). He struck out 10 and gave up two runs and five hits in 6 2-3 innings.

The Blue Jays also saw star slugger Josh Donaldson leave in the sixth when he aggravated the sore right calf that kept him out of Tuesday's home opener.

Justin Smoak crushed his first home run of the year in Friday's loss to the Orioles. But the Orioles perhaps pushed their luck a little too far, as Asher hit Bautista leading off the 7th, advancing to second when Tulo poked a ball through the middle with one out.

Davis tacked on a run in the sixth inning with a solo shot to deep centre field.

Orioles: RHP Chris Tillman (shoulder) felt good after a bullpen session in Florida and will make a 45-pitch rehab start at Double-A Bowie on Monday. Hyun Soo Kim then doubled and Hardy belted his first homer of the season to give Baltimore a 4-3 lead.

Toronto selected Chris Coghlan from Triple-A Buffalo and designated catcher Juan Graterol for assignment.

That may well mean time at third base for the left-handed hitting Coghlan, but he has no illusions about making the same kind of impact as the 2015 AL MVP. Asher made one start at Norfolk, pitching 4 1/3 scoreless innings.

With the ironic 2017 slogan "Let's Rise" on full display around the Rogers Centre plus on top of the dugouts, the Jays need to show that they can rise up and not just take a lead, but add to a lead and ultimately hold it.
