This morning during a proclamation Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente officially recognized the month of April as child abuse prevention awareness month. We planted 25 Mylar pinwheels, with each pinwheel representing 20 children that have suffered physical or sexual abuse and received services from the CAC in 2016. Executive Director and CEO of the Mohawk Valley YWCA Dianne Stancato says the YWCA works alongside the Oneida County Child Advocacy Center to ensure the safety of children around the community.
Other organizations involved with the event are Indiana Child Advocates, Prevent Child Abuse Indiana and Kids First. "You walk in and see blue walls, hundreds of dolls who represent each child who suffered child abuse and we served here a year ago".
It also is a month where people are urged to promote the social and emotional well-being of children and families.
"We at Face It understand that ending child abuse requires action by our leaders in Frankfort and thoughtful programming by nonprofits in each Kentucky community, like the Family Nurturing Center in Northern Kentucky. Ending child abuse is up to all of us", said Jerry Ward, Chairman of the Board of Kosair Charities.
Abuse and neglect can occur in all types of families, regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status or educational achievements.
"When parents are better educated and they know all the ins and outs of raising kids, it makes things less frustrating, and parents are less likely to potentially engage in some sort of child abuse or neglect", said Brent DeMoe, director of Polk County Family & Community Outreach. Established in 1987 when the Kentucky Chapter of Prevent Child Abuse America merged with Parent's Anonymous of Kentucky.
Denver Human Services representatives say preventing child abuse is the responsibility of the community at large, and everybody can play a part even just by knowing the number to call if child abuse is observed.
Without intervention, the odds are stacked against children in foster care. And research and experience have shown what they see and experience as youngsters can have a profound impact on the kind of adults they become.
