Suspect arrested in August killing of jogger Vanessa Marcotte

The Investigation Into Vanessa Marcotte's Murder

Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early Jr. scheduled a 2 p.m. press conference Saturday, after TV news stations reported an arrest related to the slaying of Leominster native Vanessa Marcotte, who was murdered August 7 while jogging near her mother's home. The man is said to have driven a dark SUV that would have been in the vicinity of the murder that day and would have likely had scratches on his arms, hands and face.

Marcotte was out for a jog on August 7 while visiting her mother's home on Brooks Station Road in Princeton.

More than eight months after Vanessa Marcotte was killed while out for a run, officials in MA announced the arrest of a man in her death Saturday.

"There's also one other person I'd like to thank in this case, and that would be Vanessa Marcotte", Early said.

The man's arrest comes after DNA recovered from Marcotte's fingernails with a cheek swab matched those of the accused killer.

Upon his arrest the man was charged with aggravated assault and battery as well as assault with intent to rape. Early says more charges are expected.

Police told at the time that the DNA evidence allowed them to develop a profile for a suspect in the case.

Unable to find a piece of paper, Early said the trooper wrote down the vehicle's license plate number on his hand.

"On Friday, state police found a match for that DNA, and they determined that the suspect, Colon-Ortiz, was the match", Early said. He then looked it up, visited the home of Colon-Ortiz and left a business card, asking him to call.

Sources said Ortiz was being held at the State Police barracks in Millbury, and is due to be arraigned on Tuesday. Early said Colon-Ortiz, who speaks limited English, has requested an attorney.
