YouTube's Live TV Streaming Service Is Officially Available for Subscription

YouTube TV Snares AMC's 'Walking Dead' for Its Live Service

That means YouTube TV will need a way to stand out amongst the competition, either by offering better service (something we've had problems with with other providers), better pricing, or better channel selections.

The YouTube TV app is simple, with just three tabs for you to choose from: Library, Home, and Live.

So for now, YouTube TV is only available in the following five markets: Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Ultimately, though, YouTube TV is about YouTube getting more of its core users - 18- to 34-year-olds - to spend more time on its platforms.

YouTube TV, for instance, features staples such as ESPN and major broadcast networks, but lacks key networks such as PBS, CNN and Comedy Central. But YouTube Red, which offers ad-free viewing and access to those same originals, remains a separate product. YouTube TV will launch with 40 networks and will add ten more, including AMC and the BBC, "soon after launch", YouTube said.

YouTube's highly anticipated answer to Sling TV, DIRECTV NOW, and PlayStation Vue is officially live today.

In February, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki‏ said consumers around the world watch one billion hours of YouTube every day and younger people don't want to watch TV through traditional channels. "One of the great things about casting, now your phone can transform itself into a remote", says Christian Oestlien, YouTube TV's product management director. Ironically, the only way to get YouTube TV onto an actual TV set is with a Chromecast - there aren't apps for the Apple TV or other set-top boxes or consoles yet. You can also scroll through other programming without changing the channel from what you're watching.

While the experience is mobile-based, you can use a Chromecast to beam shows and movies to the living room television.

If you like sports, you can select your favorite teams and YouTube TV will automatically record the games they play. And finally, it's social, allowing you to share videos quickly and easily with friends nearby. And we'll keep each of your recordings for 9 months. The YouTube Go app took around a year of development and is still available in beta phase on Play Store. For each show you can check out episodes, a summary, the cast, and related and similar shows. The app can stream on phones, tablets or computers. With the YouTube Go app, the company is trying to tackle the problem of low bandwidth that we usually experience on cellular connectivity.
