5 highlights of India Pakistan cricket match in Champions trophy
Jun 11 2017
After Pakistan slumped to a humiliating 124-run defeat in their opening Champions Trophy clash against India, head coach Mickey Arthur has admitted that his side's performance was below par and that the loss had given them the reality check of where they stand in one-day cricket.
But despite this, defending champions India put up an all-round show to drub arch-rivals Pakistan by 124 runs via Duckworth-Lewis (DL) method in a rain-marred match.
When India needed sixes and fours in the last couple of overs, Pandya, sent in ahead of MS Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav, did just that, smacking the left-arm spinner Imad Wasim for three maximums in a row in the final over, which completely deflated Pakistan.
"We had a poor game today".
Yuvraj Singh was declared Man of The Match for his smashing 53 off 32 balls scintillating cameo.
Pak skipper Sarfaraz, before the game had said that Pakistan are ranked number 8 in the team rankings and have nothing to lose.
With the target being revised to 289 from 41 overs, the Indian bowlers then stepped up and bundled out Pakistan for 164 from 33.4 overs with Umesh Yadav (3/30) being the pick of the bowlers.
"And we chose to play an extra seamer against Pakistan, purely because of the fact that he becomes a wicket-taking option".
When asked about the inclusion of an extra seamer in the squad for Sunday's game, Kohli said, "We made a decision to play an extra seamer against Pakistan purely because of the fact that it becomes a wicket taking option".
"The way he (Yuvraj) was hitting the ball, I felt like a club batter in front of him", Kohli told reporters at the post-match press conference late Sunday night here at Edgbaston. Rohit Sharma (91) and Shikhar Dhawan (68) gave a steady start to their side.
He gives Kohli the option of playing one pure bowler less, while also knowing that the batting lineup is long and strong, which in turn allows the top order to bat more freely. "This will surely lift the confidence of the team and help them do better in bigger games over the course of the tournament." he concluded. "But when you're out there, you just want to get 15 extra for the team", he said.
"The worrying thing for me, and it has been for a period of time, is we just do the basics wrong".
Sources from PCB said Rumman Raees and Mohammad Abbas are being considered as a possible replacement for Wahab Riaz.
Both Yuvraj and Kohli were given lives en route to their match-changing knocks. I always feel that in cricket, you need to back yourself and be confident.
"Everything was under control after 40 overs, but we lost the plot in the last eight", Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed said.
