Alaska and New Mexico had the highest state unemployment rates in May, at 6.7 percent and 6.6 percent respectively.

Texas posted another month of strong job growth in May, the Texas Workforce Commission reported Friday, led by oil and gas jobs that are rushing back as producers send rigs back to work.

In May, 56,100 San Diegans were unemployed out of a civilian labor force of 1.55 million people, according to the EDD. The unemployment rate in May stayed at 3.1 percent for the third straight month.

OC professional and business services increased by 900 jobs, the biggest local gain, followed by construction at 800, financial activities at 300, and leisure and hospitality at 200.

The county's economy added 710 jobs over the previous year, growing to 17,470.

The May unemployment numbers showed an increase of a tenth of a percentage point, increasing the rate to 5.0%.

However, Wisconsin's low unemployment rate is tracking with a national drop as well. Most of the new jobs were in the service sector, led by education and health services, up 350 or 7.9 percent to 4,790; and government, up 90 or 2 percent to 4,550. That included April's losses, the largest single month decline in years.

Since May of past year, Pennsylvania's unemployment rate is down one-half of a percentage point, while the national rate declined by four-tenths from last May. The May state unemployment rate remains lower than the national rate of 4.3% reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

In May 2016, California's unemployment rate was 5.5 percent.

The lowest rate was 2.7 percent in Cumberland County and the highest was 6.2 percent in Aroostook County.

"When you compare jobs we have now to a year ago, the Maryland economy is continuing to grow at a moderate rate, and its trajectory seems to be consistent", Teshome said.
