State police in central India have dropped sedition charges against 15 Muslim men who were arrested for celebrating Pakistan cricket team's victory over India in the Champions Trophy final.

The accused were presented before the court on Tuesday and sent to jail.

Video of a Pakistani fan insulting and abusing Indian cricketers after the final of ICC Champions Trophy 2017, went viral on the internet.

Sedition is among India's most serious charges.

The police dropped the sedition charges on Thursday after the families of the arrested youths approached the President, national and state human rights commissions and national and state minority commissions.

India, who's seam attack looked tired, were constantly put under pressure, during the Pakistan innings, as the initiative to up the run-rate was made possible by both Azhar and then Hafeez who both contributed half-centuries as the innings finished on 338.

In a statement on Wednesday, it condemned the arrests, describing them as "another worrying sign of the erosion of freedom of expression in India".

Last year, in fact, SC reiterated the position when it said that sedition charges can not be slapped merely for criticising the government. They think we are at each other with knives every time India plays Pakistan.

There have been concerns that the Champions Trophy triumph could delay much needed reforms to the structure of Pakistan cricket and damage the future potential of the team.
