Race winner Lewis Hamilton of Great Britain and Mercedes GP celebrates in the Pitlane during the Canadian Formula One Grand Prix at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve

Seven races in, Hamilton now trails Vettel by 12 points with both men having three wins each this season. Hamilton's margin of victory was a whopping 19.783 seconds over his Brackley team-mate Bottas. I'm shaking. Ayrton, I know for many of you was your favourite driver and he was for me.

Hamilton's 56th race win in Formula One came at the scene of his first, with that breakthrough success in Montreal occurring nearly 10 years to the day earlier.

But Mercedes, and in particular Hamilton, will be delighted with their recovery after a weekend to forget at the previous round in Monaco a fortnight ago.

SENNA HELMET: After qualifying, Hamilton was presented with one of Senna's race-worn helmets - a gesture from the Brazilian driver's family that left him moved and momentarily stunned.

"Obviously, we're not the quickest auto on the track at the moment but we're managing to put it together on a Sunday", said Ricciardo. "That doesn't mean it's going to be like that all the time".

Sir Patrick Stewart conducted the podium interviews before downing champagne from Ricciardo's race boot.

"So then they had a run at each other into Turn 13-14 and I focused on the exit, which was good - and I just, yeah, I committed halfway down the straight and I said I (would) go down the inside no matter what".

"There was a lot of time to think when I was up front, reliving the memories of 2007 here and actually several of the years that I've been here".

The Force India's of Perez and Ocon finished fifth and sixth.

Explaining his reasoning for doing so, Hamilton claims it wasn't just for the rookie moving out of his way, but that he wanted to acknowledge an impressive performance from Stroll which eventually resulted in his first F1 points.

At the restart, Verstappen attacked Hamilton hard, nearly making a pass that would have changed the race.

As they squabbled and battled, Vettel was able to get right behind them and pull off the overtake of the race: a courageous late-braking move on the dusty tarmac of the inside of turn 1 to get by Esteban Ocon. He was up to seventh when he made another pit in Lap 50 to prepare for a final charge. He was followed by championship rival Sebastian Vettel, Valtteri Bottas and Kimi Raikkonen. "It was bad that we didn't spot it - I had a little bit of a feel [that there was damage] out of Turn 6 and then the safety vehicle came, but I wasn't sure because it was the first lap of the race and it was very windy, so I thought it might have been a gust and the first lap the tyres are not there".

Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso continued to struggle with his McLaren Honda.

"I knew where Sebastian was throughout the race", said Hamilton, who crossed the line a commanding 20 seconds clear of Bottas.

Another incident took place on turn 2 of the first lap, when Roman Grosjean's Haas tangled with the Toro Rosso of Carlos Sainz.

Verstappen quickly applied pressure to Hamilton after the restart, but saw his hopes of a podium finish dashed by a battery issue in the hybrid system of his RB13.
