Doctor Who Twitter Teases 13th Doctor, Reveal Set for this Sunday

Who will replace Peter Capaldi? Simon Ridgway BBC

The identity of Doctor Who's 13th Time Lord will be revealed following the Wimbledon men's singles tennis final on Sunday, the BBC has announced. It's not a huge surprise that Capaldi is leaving, as the previous Doctor, Matt Smith, also lasted three seasons.

"Filming has only just wrapped up for #Peter Capaldi as the twelfth "#Doctor Who", as they finished this year Christmas special earlier in the week.

We were gifted a resolution to this question with a breathtaking performance on Capaldi's part in the Series 10 finale.

The BBC however have now announced the wait will soon be over, with a new teaser video revealing the identity of the next Doctor will be announced on Sunday 16 July. "Broadchurch" star Jodie Whittaker has also been given good odds.

There have been many names tossed around as to who the next Doctor will be.

There has been speculation that the Doctor will switch genders this time and become a woman. Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the star and creator of Amazon's Fleabag, has been mentioned as a potential female Doctor (although her representatives have denied this to be the case), as has Broadchurch star Olivia Coleman and even Tilda Swinton.

Whoever the role goes to, we can expect the next series, with an all new Doctor and showrunner, to take a different direction than the previous few series has.

In a Tweet that's sending Doctor Who fans everywhere into meltdown, BBC America posted a cryptic video that teases the coming of the Thirteenth Doctor.
