BJP takes serious note of MPs absence, warns against recurrence

Amit Shah

At the BJP's weekly meeting of Parliamentarians, Shah told the lawmakers on Tuesday morning, "This is not a good thing as people have elected MPs to represent them in the House". Sports minister Vijay Goyal could not attend as he was not well, Sitharaman is in China on an official trip, while Prasad, said sources, had reached the Rajya Sabha but the doors were closed for voting on the bill.

In 2015 too, Modi was anguished over the loss of face due to opposition pushing division of votes in RS over an amendment to the President's address.

As the Opposition members rallied to criticise the Lok Sabha secretariat for excluding the Upper House from management of the Parliament Building, Naqvi said that a precedent dating from 1952 holds that the management and construction of the building is overseen by the Lok Sabha Speaker.

BJP president further said that by resolving the issue of One rank one pension (OROP), the party took a major step to boost the morale of Indian army men.

He also questioned why they stopped its passage in the Rajya Sabha when it aims to benefit backward castes. The BJPs strength in the house is 56, while the ruling bloc enjoys the support of 88 members, including 10 JD (U) MPs. "What can I say", he mused, adding that once he landed up in jail, he would visit Nawab and ask him for sure on why he quit the SP, which gave him so much. They have also been asked to explain in writing why they were missing from the house when the bill was voted on.

Shah reminded the Other Backward Classes (OBC) that the "Modi government did a great job by according Constitutional status to the OBC Commission".

The BJP chief, with reference to Panama Papers, said there existed no names from his party in those leaks, and in any circumstance, the Special Investigation Team was examining the Panama Papers leaks. Shah will also be presented with a report card highlighting the Khattar government's achievements during its over 1,000-day rule, Barala said.
