Manhunt Underway in Mo. After Police Officer Fatally Shot During Traffic Stop

MSHP says they are looking for Ian McCarthy 39 of Clinton MO as a person of interest in the case

According to KCTV, authorities are searching for the person they say shot and killed a Clinton, MO police officer Sunday night. He was taken to hospital where he later died of his injuries.

'We know as police officers that those traffic stops are always risky because we don't know the individual that is driving. Michael had been with the police department for less than one year, Lowe said.

"In a small community, the police department is very tight-knit, so it's obviously devastating for the family and also for the police department", Lowe said.

About 8:30 a.m., the Missouri Highway Patrol said via Twitter that McCarthy was the suspect in the fatal shooting.

Sergeant Bill Lowe of the Missouri Highway Patrol told 41 Action News the traffic stop was in regard to a registration violation. The suspect then exited his auto again and fled on foot.

Lowe said Monday that the vehicle Michael stopped is registered to McCarthy.

Officials believe he may still be traveling on foot and say it is likely he is still in the Clinton area. Neighbors reported seeing a man running from the vehicle after the crash, he said.

A manhunt was underway in Missouri Monday for a person of interest in the fatal shooting of a police officer.

"(Michael) was heroic right to the end", Lowe added.

Officer Michael leaves behind a wife and step sons. "You want to make sure you keep your distance but contact us".

Michael was shot during a traffic stop in Clinton.

People should call 911 or *55 if they see anybody suspicious or who looks like McCarthy, Lowe said.
