Mayo Clinic Named Best Hospital In Nation For 2nd Time

Northwestern ranked Illinois' top hospital, according to US News

The ranking for UCLA Medical Center is a dip from past year, when the hospital was ranked fifth on the magazine's annual Best Hospitals Honor Roll.

"While we are proud of the programs that have been recognized, we are disappointed with the overall rankings of the Medical Center", U. of C. Medicine said.

U.S. News & World Report ranked the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville as the best hospital in Florida.

"For almost three decades, we've strived to make hospital quality more transparent to health care consumers nationwide", said Ben Harder, managing editor and chief of health analysis at U.S. News.

UW Hospital in Madison takes the top spot in Wisconsin. VUMC was lauded for seven adult specialties and 10 children's specialty procedures.

Officials didn't explain why it vaulted back to No. 1 this year for the first time in five years, though University of Colorado Hospital president and CEO Will Cook noted that the volume of patients the hospital is seeing increased significantly over the last year and added that its quality outcomes continue to improve.

The ranking factors in hospital performance in 16 specialty areas as well as procedures offered.

Hershey Medical Center in Dauphin County ranked fourth statewide, making the national ranking in two adult specialties and four children's specialties, and recognized as high-performing in eight procedures or conditions.

The University of Kansas Hospital and St. Luke's Hospital again topped Kansas City's adult medical institutions in rankings released this week by U.S. News and World Report. "It tells potential employees what a great place it is to work, it tells patients in the community that you don't have to leave the community to get your health care, and it tells folks that we are one of the best in the country".

Other hospitals in the Triangle performed well in a variety of areas, but did not rank nationally in any medical specialty. According to survey officials, the rankings are grounded in objective data and offer patients a deep, rich resource on their hospital choices.

"The 50-point spread between our closest peer group that was (tightly grouped) at No. 2-4 was what really jumped out at me", Noseworthy said.

U.S. News ranks hospitals on a number of measures, including patient survival and readmission rates, patient experience, and patient safety, among other categories. Northwestern Memorial remains ranked 1st in both the Chicago Metro Region and IL for the sixth consecutive year.

The highest national rankings for Wake Forest Baptist were 27th in cancer and nephrology, along with 33rd in geriatrics and gynecology, 34th in ear, nose and throat, and 37th in neurology and neurosurgery. It's newest rankings were announced Tuesday.

The hospital has also recently been responsible for developing an antibiotic-releasing polymer which may simplify the treatment of prosthetic joint infection, according to a recent press release.
