National Basketball Association star Zach Randolph of the Sacramento Kings was one of two people arrested Wednesday night while a crowd formed in the Nickerson Gardens housing project in Watts and vandalized six police cars.
TMZ reports that Randolph was released from jail at 8:02 a.m. PT.
According to CBS2 in Los Angeles, police charged Randolph with felony drug possession with intent to sell. They ultimately found a large group of people smoking marijuana and blocking the road, at which point Randolph himself was popped with what is likely a large amount of the substance. The officers then tried to disperse the crowd, and the disturbance escalated. After a small chase, three people wound up being arrested, with Randolph one of the three. Backup was called when the crow grew and began throwing bottles, resulting in smashed windows and slashed tires on several police cars. A second man, identified as Stanley Walton, was arrested on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm. Additionally, police recovered two guns, impounded two vehicles and seized narcotics.
Randolph, a two-time All Star who joined the Kings on a two-year $24 million contract earlier this summer from the Memphis Grizzlies, was detained along with another man. He was being held on $20,000 bail.
Randolph began his National Basketball Association career in 2001 with the Portland Trailblazers before spending time playing for the New York Knicks and Los Angeles Clippers.
