Kelly Clarkson: I didn't want to win American Idol

Culture > Music

America's sweetheart promised a soulful pop album inspired by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey, but "Love So Soft" falls closer to Back To Basics-era Christina Aguilera in its blend of old and new.

THIS is the album I've always wanted to make... and I finally get to share it with y'all!

The soulful track brings to mind singers like Aretha Franklin and Adele, but with Clarkson's distinctive powerful belts and a throwback beat. As a result, she had total control of the project, and in a Q&A with fans on YouTube she raved about the album.

Clarkson's new album could be the beginning of something big for the singer, as she'd previously left record label RCA Records and signed with Atlantic Records in June 2016.

Meaning Of Life is Kelly's eighth studio album and is slated for release on October 27. We have already started creating a record that I have been wanting to make since I was a little girl, and a record that fans have been asking me to make for years. The album sees Kelly working with past collaborators including Jason Halbert, Jesse Shatkin and Greg Kurstin, in addition to first time collaborators such as Mick Schultz, and The Monarch. She'll perform that song, as well as "Move You", on NBC's Today show Friday morning. Singing of wanting to get closer to a man, Clarkson says that she needs to know if he'll respect her and protect her if she lets him in. So, it's obvious that she's pretty excited about the new opportunities ahead of her.
