Police secure the perimeter of a high school in Spokane WA after a shooting that killed one person and injured others

Area school districts, shocked and saddened by the events on September 20 at Freeman High School, have taken steps in hopes of avoiding a similar situation.

Spokane Public Schools said on Twitter that all schools in the district are "being placed into modified lockdown as a precautionary measure".

"Today I had the privilege to be down at the hospital as I got to watch the parents actually kick people out of the hospital because of the amount of community that was already down there with support for them", Lingbloom said. Some students alerted counsellors, the teen told AP, but it wasn't clear what school officials did in response.

The suspect in a shooting that left one student dead at a Washington state high school had posted videos online showing him playing with guns. The day before the shooting, students and staff at Freeman High School practiced a lockdown drill.

An initial court appearance has been set for the suspect in a shooting at a small high school in Washington state.

Parent Brandi Albert said, "I always thought this is such a great school and you would never think that anything like this would ever happen here".

Annie Baxter, whose two daughters attend Freeman Middle School across the street from the high school, told The Spokesman-Review that children were running into buildings when she pulled up to the school area about 10:15 a.m.

"It's been wonderful, within probably 15-20 minutes of hearing about it, I'd already received a phone call, I'd already received a text message saying that their school is OK", she said. "I've never heard him like that", Moser told The Spokesman-Review newspaper.

“We are profoundly saddened by the violence at Freeman High School and offer our deepest sympathies to the victims, their families and all members of the Freeman Schools community, ” Maben said.
