Amazon founder becomes richest person in the world


According to calculations from Bloomberg and Forbes, which both track the world's richest people on a daily basis, Bezos surpassed Microsoft founder Bill Gates to become the world's richest person on Friday morning.

Microsoft shares had climbed close to 7 per cent at the same time, also as a result of its third quarter earnings announced on Thursday at Wall Street's closing bell.

Jeff Bezos once again became the richest man in the world on Friday morning, after adding almost $7 billion to his wealth overnight. Mr Gates has been the world's richest person since 2013, though he briefly slipped behind Mr Bezos during intraday trading on 27 July Gates ended that day on top. Gates's net worth rose by US$5.6 billion, even after he donated US$4.6 billion of Microsoft stock to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in August.

The billionaire's net worth hit $92.8 billion around 1630 GMT, making him the world's richest person again.

A few hours later, though, Bezos had slipped back to second place as Amazon shares pared their gains.

It became a major player in grocery retail overnight with the purchase of Whole Foods for US$13.7 billion in June.
