Blade Runner 2049 ends weekend slightly up on original box office estimates

Blade Runner 2049 falls short during opening weekend

"Alcon and Denis [Villeneuve, the director] made an fantastic movie".

The sequel to the 1982 cult classic, which also stars Harrison Ford as well as Ryan Gosling, cost Sony and Alcon Entertainment $150m to make.

Rounding out the 10 most-popular movies over the weekend were "American Made" ($8.4 million); "The Lego Ninjago Movie" ($7 million); "Victoria and Abdul" ($4.2 million); "Flatliners" ($4 million); and "Battle of the Sexes" ($2.6 million).

Blade Runner 2049 opened this past weekend, and now its Rotten Tomatoes score is in.

"Blade Runner 2049" finished its underwhelming opening weekend with a bit of good news, bringing in $32.8 million at 4,058 sites in North America, thanks to a better-than-projected performance on Sunday. "It's a tough one, because Denis made a lovely movie", Warners domestic distribution chief Jeff Goldstein said. "The real trick now is to expand the audience past older men".

"We did well in the major and high-profile markets", he added.

Scott is a producer this time around, but he had his hands in the film's development, along with "Blade Runner" scribe Hampton Fancher (who co-writes here with Michael Green). I personally prefer his more alive and loose-limbed L.A. detective from "The Nice Guys", but Gosling's nature plays into the movie. The adventure/romance movie starring Kate Winslet and Idris Elba as two strangers whose survive their charter plane crash landing has an estimated production budget of $35 million. Based on the Hasbro toys and TV series, the movie's voice cast includes Emily Blunt, Kristin Chenoweth, Uzo Aduba, and Sia.

Globally, the film took $50.2m and claimed the number one spot in 45 of its 63 markets, Screen Daily reported.

With all these theatrical releases, the action film Kingsman: the golden circle has fallen from first to fifth place with revenue of $ 8.7 million in three days and 80 million dollars in three weeks.
