The Last of Us 2 voice cast revealed alongside new trailer

The Last of Us Part 2 trailer is maybe the best thing shown today – watch it here

While Joel and Ellie were nowhere to be seen in this new footage, Naughty Dog instead made a decision to introduce players to a selection of new characters, along with some of the most gratuitously violent scenes that have ever been featured in a video game trailer.

The game was first announced last December at the PlayStation Experience event, and it was a smaller teaser showing Joel and Ellie - both of whom are absent in this new trailer. A woman is being strung up on a noose and is about to be disemboweled before being hanged.

The original The Last of Us was an incredibly violent game, but that violence never felt out of place.

He also suggests that the game will not focus on the two characters most well-known to fans.

Watch this at your peril and don't forget that we told you so. Strangely though, there's not a hint of Joel or Ellie in sight.

At its core, The Last of Us is still very much about Ellie and Joel, but for this reveal, we wanted to showcase several new characters that are integral to their next journey.

The idea of this being some sort of religious cult solidifies as the female who was about to disembowel the other unfortunate hostage, asks the new captive for the location of an unnamed "apostate.' She gets a fleck of spit in her face as an answer".

I'm just a liiiiiitle bit excited for the follow-up to Naughty Dog's hit game, The Last of Us.

Druckmann adds that Naughty Dog won't be revealing more about the game's narrative or new characters for now, instead allowing the five-minute video to do the talking and let its mysteries remain unsolved.

Needless to say, The Last of Us Part II looks ridiculously mature, dark and brutal - and we can't wait.
