UFC 216: Ferguson vs

Anthony Johnson

It took Tony Ferguson the better part of 2017, but he finally won himself the UFC interim lightweight title.

After the fight, an elated Ferguson said the fight went to plan as he looked to use Lee's aggression against him during the contest. According to UFC president Dana White, the UFC lightweight champion is going to defend his title.

Derrick Lewis was forced out of the fight earlier in the day after a back injury flared up and Harris agreed to move from his fight with Mark Godbeer to meet the former champion. "It's the fight that has to happen, it doesn't 'make sense, ' it's the fight that has to happen".

'Obviously, Conor had an opportunity to make a lot of money [against Mayweather], and I felt it was my duty to try and make that fight happen.

Typically when an interim title fight is contested, the true champion is cageside to watch or at least prepared to issue some sort of statement afterwards. When I was in there, I was feeling good and it was time to hit it.

He's maintained nearly total silence on his fighting future since losing via TKO in a boxing match against Floyd Mayweather in August, and didn't break it for Ferguson.

Ferguson theorized: "The boy's scared". "He's never mentioned my name, not one time during this whole entire time".

"El Cucuy" proceeded to call out the Irishman in his post-fight speech but while a McGregor vs Ferguson match-up is a mouthwatering one for the hardcore fan, it could be Nate Diaz who ends up as the next opponent for the 29-year-old.

McGregor has held up Ferguson's career long enough.

"There are no words to describe this week's tragedy in Las Vegas", White said.

"Tony keeps coming forward and Conor's awesome". And Conor's awesome. There's no way that's not a great fight.

"It can be Khabib, it can be Conor, I'm going to go back to the drawing board, talk to my manager, agents and my team but the fight is with Conor". I'll ankle pick him.

"We were just out there having fun", Ferguson said.
