Brock Osweiler to replace Trevor Siemian at QB for Broncos
Nov 02 2017
In addition to Siemian and Osweiler, the Broncos also have 2016 first-round draft choice Paxton Lynch on the roster, but starting him on the road against the Eagles was likely too daunting a task for his season debut, after playing three games as a rookie. Osweiler has as many regular-season starts in the National Football League as Siemian - 21 apiece - but the Broncos are his third team in the last 12 months after the Texans traded him to Cleveland, which released him at the cutdown to 53 players in September.
Just days after Denver's most recent loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, it was announced on Wednesday that Osweiler would be the starter under center for Sunday's meeting against Philadelphia.
That final year when they won the Super Bowl, he went 5-2 as the starter while the future Hall of Famer was injured.
His performance during that time resulted in a massive four-year, $72 million contract with the Houston Texans, where Osweiler lasted just one season after recording 2,957 yard, 15 touchdowns and 16 picks. Trevor Siemian has been absolutely awful the past five games, in which the Broncos have gone 1-4.
If the Broncos had brought in someone with a different skill set - going out and signing Colin Kaepernick, for instance - then maybe Pederson would have altered his plan. We're not yet two years removed from that happening, and now - 23 regular season games later - Osweiler is finally getting another shot to be Denver's starting quarterback.
Trevor Siemian tossed three interceptions, completing 19 of 36 passes for 198 yards and a late, nearly meaningless score. "A really good unit", Smith said.
Joseph said Lynch hasn't played enough football yet since returning from the injury to be ready to start. "But [after] losing three games in a row and having five turnovers [Monday], anything's possible".
"When you watch Trevor, even last night, he made three frightful interceptions, I mean horrific decisions, with those three he threw last night", Joseph said.
Plus, Osweiler and Siemian aren't that differently in terms of talent and the way they play the game.
