Zama, Japan: Japanese police have found nine mutilated bodies hidden in containers with their heads cut off and flesh stripped in a suburban Tokyo flat, media reported on Tuesday.

He may also have briefly kept some of his victims alive before murdering them.

The suspect, Takahiro Shiraishi, is reported to have confessed to killing and dismembering nine individuals. Neighbours reported that unpleasant smells were emanating from his apartment, and that Shiraishi left cooler boxes outside his front door. Forensic tests are being conducted on the restraints.

After his arrest, Shiraishi is said to have admitted dismembering the victims in his bathroom, and putting some of the body parts in rubbish bins.

"It's true that I tried to hide the bodies of the people I killed to destroy evidence", Mr. Shiraishi said, according to a police statement cited by the Japan Times.

The Mainichi report said that he had found his first victim on Twitter and had asked to meet up, but that she had come with her boyfriend.

A police spokesman said Takahiro Shiraishi, 27, was arrested on suspicion of abandoning a body, although it was not clear whose body it was.

The pair were reportedly recorded on CCTV camera outside a train station near her home and the suspect's home. Media reports said he used similar tactics to kill seven other women, four of them teenagers.

The gruesome case captured widespread attention in a country known for public safety, topping news with reports that showed the building where the suspect lived in a small studio apartment. When he sought information about his sister's disappearance on Twitter, an unidentified woman replied that she had met Shiraishi and agreed to cooperate with police by setting up a fake appointment. The brother later learned of the suicide site after logging in using her name and password, leading to the discovery that she had been in touch with the suspect.
