Shalane Flanagan becomes first American woman to win New York City Marathon in 40 years

New York's recent tragedy revived memories of the 2013 Boston Marathon that was targeted by bombers, but the carnage also helped inspire Flanagan's triumphant run.

Shalane Flanagan won the 47th New York City Marathon on Sunday, becoming the first able-bodied American to win the women's event in 40 years. The two runners embraced at the finish line after it was all over. and then no doubt fled soon after for a dark, quiet bedroom and some well-earned rest.

Kamworor, who had finished second in 2014 behind Wycliffe Kipsang, was this time around the master as he broke away from among others Kipsang and Ethiopian Desisa Lelisa and Lemi Berhanu in the last three kilometers to win.

Kenya's Mary Keitany, bidding for her fourth consecutive victory in the race, was 61 seconds back in second. Kamworor, 24, finished the race in 2 hours, 10 minutes and 53 seconds.

Flanagan had said she may retire if she won NY.

The last American woman to win NY was Miki Gorman, who took consecutive titles in 1976-77.

Kipsang, the 2014 NY champion, was three seconds back with Ethiopia's Lelisa Desisa third in 2:11:32.

Kenya's Geoffrey Kamworor won the men's division of Sunday's marathon with a time of 2:10:53, three seconds better than countryman Wilson Kipsang.

Comedian Kevin Hart is the biggest celebrity running NY.

Kamworor was on two occasions used as a pacesetter at 2011 Berlin and 2012 Rotterdam Marathon, before his full marathon debut at 2012 Berlin.

"I don't want to see a bunch of memes of me looking weird out here", Hart said shortly before starting.

Kipsang, the 2014 NY champion, was three seconds back with Ethiopia's Lelisa Desisa third in 2:11:32.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said the event being staged as planned was "a terrorist's worst nightmare" for bringing together people from a variety of cultures with resiliency despite the deadly attack.
