South Africa has crowned the title of Miss Universe 2017
Nov 28 2017
In the pageant's 66th year, almost 100 women from around the world-including first-timers from Cambodia, Laos and Nepal- took part.
Miss Colombia, Laura González was the first runner-up, while Miss Jamaica, Davina Bennett was the second. Along with that, numerous contestants are recent high school graduates, who delay education just to participate in Miss Universe, and numerous times don't pursue education afterwards. At least Steve Harvey didn't make a mix up this time around. "I think she deserves it", commented Meg Swertlow of E-News following the big announcement.
Grammy-Award victor Fergie and Rachel Platten, best known for her 2015 hit "Fight Song", are scheduled to perform during the show.
Kára McCullough of Washington, D.C., who made the finals at the Las Vegas event, asked Harvey a question when she was announced as a top 10 contestant. And, she started a program that trains women in self-defense.
Peters advanced to the top 16 via wildcard and sashayed the pageant stage for the swimsuit round.
Aside from her Afro, she dazzled in her yellow evening gown and was also solid in the question and answer segment.
"In some places, women get paid 75 per cent of what men earn for doing the same job, working the same hours, and I do not believe that is right", said Nel-Peters, who recently earned a business management degree.
The former Miss South Africa was held at gunpoint just one month after being crowned and has now gone on to win the new crown.
A Good Samaritan saw her fleeing the scene and drove her to safety, and she escaped unharmed. Bennett responded, "The quality I am most proud of is my drive, my determination". Also in the Top 5 were Miss Venezuela Keysi Sayago and Miss Thailand Maria Poonlertlarp.
Femme Fanon: "miss jamaica look like a plate of oxtail, rice an peas, fry dumplin, an fry plantain and de gwan disrespect de gyal?!? chuh mi nah wan hear it! sacrise!"
Nel-Peters is from the South African coastal community of Sedgefield in the Western Cape province. She was representing South Africa.
This year's pageant has more contestants than ever before.
