Ready Player One trailer shows world of pop culture collide

Steven Spielberg directs the adaptation of the popular novel

"There are so many more compelling reasons to escape into the OASIS than exist in real life", Spielberg tells EW about his dystopian adventure, which is based on the 2011 novel by Ernest Cline. If you've found yourself stumped by some of them, fear not - we have created a handy guide to the Ready Player One trailer Easter eggs and references which you can find in the gallery below!

There's a good chance you'll find more than a couple of well-known characters from either games or movies in Ready Player One's trailer. And Ready Player One already has a flawless sequel name built in to its premise - Ready Player Two, anyone?

Set in the year 2044, Ready Player One centers on Wade Watts, a teenage boy growing up in poverty in the USA, which has been devastated by global warming and energy crises. Cline noted in 2015 that he had written a couple of outlines for a potential sequel, but hadn't started writing the book at that point. When an unlikely young hero named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) decides to join the contest, he is hurled into a breakneck, reality-bending treasure hunt through a fantastical universe of mystery, discovery, and danger. In the trailer we can see that the movie will be about finding the Easter Egg that James Halliday (creator of the virtual world, Oasis) left behind after his death. Aided by fellow hunters such as Art3mis, they have to race against a massive corporation that wants control of OASIS. It may benefit from moving to a new decade entirely.

While he didn't share any details for the forthcoming novel, Cline did talk about getting inspiration from Spielberg himself as he bounced ideas off him for the Ready Player One book sequel.
