Manhunt underway after deputy chasing suspects is fatally shot in Washington state

Pierce County deputy killed by fleeing burglar is identified; manhunt for gunman underway

"Heartbroken to report Deputy Daniel McCartney, #484, lost his life overnight while courageously protecting citizens of Pierce Co.", Pierce County Sheriff's Office tweeted.

A police officer was shot and killed in response to a report of home intrusion in an area about 23 kilometers away from Tacoma in Washington state on the US west coast, the state's Pierce County Sheriff's Department (PCSD) said Monday.

Police say two suspects were involved.

One of the burglars was found dead near the scene, and a handgun was recovered. It was unclear which of the suspects shot the deputy, or if both fired at him. He later died. The 34-year-old deputy was a three-year veteran of the force.

The department asked in a Facebook posting that the deputy's family, friends, and the department be kept in people's thoughts and prayers. McCartney was responding to a 9-1-1 call about an intruder at a home on 200th Street East.

Deputy Daniel McCartney was shot and killed during a foot chase as he responded to a home invasion in the Frederickson area, southeast of Tacoma, late Sunday night. A large containment area around the shooting scene was blocked off for several hours while authorities searched for a second suspect.

Some roads in the area are closed. He was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and a black beanie. Trudi and I are saddened and praying for the deputy's young family as they grieve the loss of their husband and father.

The Bethel School District canceled all classes Monday because of the ongoing manhunt, which included authorities blocking roads leading to the district's bus facility and preventing bus drivers from starting their t pickup routes. The Pierce County Skills Center will also be closed.
