Fight The Flu: Walmart Offering Flu Shots Through Flu Season

Forty people in Nebraska have died from the flu this season, one of those, a child.

A recent study by tested 18 surfaces inside airplanes and terminals at three major USA airports, and there was one item that was more disgusting than any other: self-help ticketing kiosks. Hawaii and OR reported regional flu activity; Washington, D.C., and Gaum reported local influenza; and the U.S. Virgin Islands reported sporadic activity for the week.

Loeb said it's challenging to pinpoint how effective the flu shot is in preventing the flu because it depends on what strain is being discussed.

"We can only hope that when the data are published at the end of the next decade, we will see a reduction in fatalities in children with influenza", Edwards said.

Pediatric flu deaths also continue to rise, with 63 children now dead from the flu so far this season. A recent CDC study showed vaccination prevents deaths by half (51 percent) among children with underlying high-risk medical conditions and almost two-thirds (65 percent) among healthy children.

"The previously recorded high for that was 7.6 percent for a non-pandemic year in 2003-2004", Schuchat said.

"Levels of influenza-like-illness across the country are now as high as we observed at the peak of the 2009 H1N1 pandemic".

"Anyone needing a flu shot can visit our clinics Monday through Friday from 8-11 a.m. or 1-4 p.m. Children are free and adults are $25", stated Kerry S Waldron, Administrator/Health Officer for the Department of Health in Lafayette and Suwannee Counties. "And H3N2 is known to be the most severe in terms of the symptoms and the consequences it causes for people". Last year, only 698 cases of the flu were reported in all.

And that's why its even more important to take preventative actions every day throughout flu season.

"We were hoping to have better news", said Dr. Schuchat. The recommendation to not use the nasal spray flu vaccine was renewed for the second year. The CDC said the vaccine offers less protection against this one because H3N2 is more likely to have changed than other strains since the vaccine was formulated.

Every U.S. state except Hawaii and OR are reporting widespread flu activity, with 42 states plus New York City, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico reporting high levels of illness, the CDC said. Norman Edelman, senior scientific advisor for the American Lung Association, told HealthDay. High-risk groups include young kids, people age 65 and over, pregnant women and those with chronic lung disease, heart disease, asthma, kidney disorders and those on chronic steroids. "And it's just not a great culture if you make people feel like they have to work when they're sick". The latest analysis comes from the researchers at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and was published in the latest online edition of Pediatrics.
