East Area Rapist arrested in decades-old case, source says

Police have linked more than 12 homicides to the Golden State Killer

"No one thinks they live next door to a serial killer", Tapia said.

AUTHORITIES within the USA consider they've lastly caught the Golden State Killer - 40 years after his horrific crimes.

The story of suspect Joseph James DeAngelo is filled with contradiction. He was also charged with the capital murders of a couple killed in March 1980 in Ventura County, California.

The East Area Rapist, also know as the Golden State Killer and the Original Night Stalker, plagued California between 1976 and 1986.

It's a point Bruce Harrington drove home as he spoke of how DNA evidence collected in the cases of his brother and sister-in-law's murders decades ago in Orange County had tied them to other criminal cases.

Authorities believe he raped 37 people in the Sacramento area and Central Valley and killed two between 1976 and 1978.

"The reply has at all times been in Sacramento", Sacramento District Legal professional Anne Marie Schubert mentioned, based on CNN.

The attacker who became known as the "East Area Rapist" is accused of at least 12 homicides, 45 rapes and dozens of burglaries across the state.

The arrest of Joseph James DeAngelo as the man accused of 51 rapes and 12 homicides across the state - after a 40-year search involving the Federal Bureau of Investigation - came about through DNA evidence linking him to dozens of brutal crimes.

"The magnitude of this case demanded that it be solved", she added.

Authorities say a serial killer committed at least 12 homicides, 45 rapes and dozens of burglaries across the state.

A man known as the notorious "Golden State Killer" is believed to be in custody. Authorities who spoke at the press conference didn't specify exactly what put the suspect on their radar, but did repeatedly make reference to DNA technology, suggesting that authorities may have recently came into possession of DNA evidence that they were able to cross-reference against a sample from DeAngelo.

"The answer has always been in Sacramento", Schubert said.

Schubert did not go too deep into specifics but said information the crime lab received in the last week led to an arrest warrant issued for DeAngelo in connection with two murders out of Sacramento. "We found the needle in the haystack, and it was right here in Sacramento".

She said the case forever altered a time of innocence in the community.

Armed with a gun, the masked rapist would break into homes while single women or couples were sleeping. He began attacking women while they were with men - and would sometimes stay for hours after the rape, rifling through their belongings and even cooking meals. He was with the Exeter Police Department between 1973 and 1976, and then employed by the Auburn Police Department from 1976 to 1979 until he was sacked for allegedly shoplifting a can of dog repellent and a hammer from a Sacramento drug store.

"I have just been overjoyed, ecstatic". Carson-Sandler, who now lives in Sun City, S.C., told The Island Packet newspaper Wednesday she had been contacted by two detectives about the rapist's arrest.

"I was not terribly interested in true crime".

Carson-Sandler has written one book and co-authored another about her attack.

On Wednesday - four days after the second anniversary of her death - California authorities finally arrested a suspect, leading McNamara's fans to credit her with helping to find justice from beyond the grave.

As he committed crimes across the state, authorities called him by different names.
