This year, they plan to do the same. They can tap or swipe their phone if it's mounted in a secure place in their auto. For a first offense, drivers can be fined $150. Distracted driving laws also prohibit wearing headphones while driving.

Preliminary 2017 data also shows almost 22,000 drivers were involved in distracted driving collisions in California, a decline from the more than 33,000 drivers involved in distracted driving collisions in 2007, the last full year before the hands-free law went into effect. "Research shows that drivers are three times more likely to crash when talking on the phone, and 23 times more likely to crash when entering information into their phone".
