Poppe, 20, is from Clarksville, Indiana. Before the big announcement, another revelation tugged at the hearts of the invested audience when Hutchinson revealed that Poppe and he were a couple, setting the audience into a swooning frenzy. The judges were especially shocked because they had already known about one American Idol romance - finalists Gabby Barrett, 18, and Cade Foehner, 21 - but, a second one threw them for a loop.
Before Hutchison and Poppe performed "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" together as the top two, Ryan Seacrest asked Hutchinson if there was a special significance to the number when he sings to Poppe.
"We didn't want people to think we weren't concentrating on the show so we kept it low", she said.
She got a tad choked up as she sang her coronation song, "Going Going Gone".
The contestants performed duets with several stars, including Patti LaBelle, LeAnn Rimes, Darius Rucker, Joe Jonas and even Kermit the Frog. "I've been signing as many pre-orders as I can. Getting to stand by her was the best". "I'm so disappointed in America's vote", another noted.
After a contentious and outrageous season, ABC's "AmericanIdol" revival came to a close and finally crowned its victor.
Jimmy Kimmel even got into the excitement, doing a "Where Are They Now" segment with on his late night show with former Idol contestants. "I am thrilled that Katy, Luke, Lionel, and Ryan will be back to once again embark on this Idol journey with us to discover the next crop of inspiring talent". The final three became the top two when Gabby Barrett was eliminated, leaving Caleb Lee Hutchinson and Maddie Poppe to vie for the coveted title of the next "American Idol".
