Florida's public high schools have seen better years than this year's U.S. News & World Report's rankings.
For schools which passed the first three steps, U.S. News calculated a College Readiness Index based on the percentages of each school's students who took and passed Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) exams.
A total of 104 bronze medals were awarded in Iowa based on graduation rates and how the schools performed on state assessments.
The school, which features a longer school year, more demanding classes and greater support than typical public schools, has hit on some techniques for helping low-income, sometimes struggling students become first-generation college graduates, principal Scott Barton said. Gautier's 90 percent graduation rate topped Ocean Springs' 87 percent, but Gautier only received a 13.4 CRI.
The charter school - that boasts a 95-percent graduation rate - earned a silver status and a ranking of 367th in California and 1,874th nationally.
"They (school staff) also create a sense that you have to build those around you". U.S. News ranked it 44th among Pennsylvania high schools.
Loveless Academy Magnet Program in Montgomery (LAMP) was named the top high school in Alabama.
The school was listed at number 17 among high schools in NY and 103 for schools across the country. Payton ranked as the nation's 52nd best high school, according to U.S. News.
Davis is Utah's second-largest school district, with more than 72,000 students. Schools which outperformed their state averages were selected.
"Where we are in the rankings is never the focus", he said. A year ago the school ranked 167 nationally.
