Tony Award nominations honor best of New York Broadway

Along with Park and Louderman, UM Music Theater alum Alexander Gemignani earned a Tony nomination Tuesday for Best Performance by an Actor in a Musical for "Rodgers & Hammerstein's Carousel".

The two-part "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child", got 10 nods, among them Anthony Boyle, who plays Scorpius Malfoy in a highly energetic performance.

SpongeBob SquarePants actor Ethan Slater is also nominated for Best Leading Actor in a Musical. "I just really thought I would never be here".

The best musical revival will likely include "Carousel" and "My Fair Lady", while the best play revival will probably be led by "Angels in America", "Three Tall Women" and "The Iceman Cometh".

Other British imports, Farinelli And The King, starring Oscar victor Mark Rylance, was nominated for five gongs and Tom Stoppard play Travesties, starring Tom Hollander, for four.

Top play nominees may include "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child", "The Children", "Meteor Shower", "Farinelli and the King" and "Junk". He said he's having a ball with Broadway audiences, which are "so vocal, it's like having an extra cast member onstage". SpongeBob SquarePants and Mean Girls are also slated to face off against Frozen and The Band's Visit for Best Book of a Musical.

Jackson, marking a return to Broadway after three decades, was nominated for best actress in a revival of Edward Albee's "Three Tall Women" while Washington won a nod for his star turn in "The Iceman Cometh".

A hit play from the "Harry Potter" franchise joined an acclaimed revival of AIDS drama "Angels in America" to dominate Broadway's Tony award nominations on Tuesday. The much-anticipated adaptation of the animated blockbuster got no nominations for its leading ladies - Caissie Levy and Patti Murin- or for traditional Disney strengths like sets and costumes.

The star-studded 72nd annual Tony Awards, the biggest night in Broadway, will be held on June 10 with singers Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban as co-hosts. Material was added by Berkshire Eagle arts editor Jeffrey Borak.
