Jackson 5 patriarch Joe Jackson dead at 89: family

Fans Commemorate Michael Jackson's Birthday

Joe Jackson, the patriarch and longtime manager of the musical Jackson family, died today at the age of 89, according to TMZ and multiple news sources.

Joe Jackson, legendary father of the Jackson Family, on the Soul Train Awards 2017 red carpet at The Orleans in Las Vegas, Nov. 5, 2017.

TMZ reports that Joe's official time of death is listed as 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 27.

Speaking to the Daily Mail before his father died on Wednesday, Jermaine Jackson said some members of the family were unable to gain access to Jackson in his final days.

The elder Jackson took a lot of heat from Michael and his siblings for abusing parenting and management practices, including physical brutality. His death comes just days after the family remembered Michael, whose death anniversary fell on 25 June.

While Michael's success as a solo performer would eventually dwarf that of the rest of his family, Janet would become another multiplatinum superstar; Joe Jackson initially managed her career too, putting her in the Jacksons' variety show in the early 1970s, where she charmed with her Mae West routine, and shepherding her acting career on shows like "Good Times".

As the Jackson children grew up and their careers grew with them, the world began to learn more about their life behind the fame.

Jackson started managing his children and their bands in the early 60s and The Jackson 5 first hit it big in 1966.

When questioned about any regrets in that CNN interview, Jackson replied: "Well, I'm glad I was tough, because look what I came out with". Carlos Keyes, representative for Jackson's son, Tito Jackson, confirmed Joe Jackson's death.

Randy Jackson Junior paid tribute to his grandfather on Twitter as he wrote: "RIP to the king that made everything possible!"

Born July 26, 1928, Jackson initially worked in the steel mills of northwest Indiana. Perkins, portrayed by Glover in pale white makeup and an extremely high-pitched voice, was clearly a spoof on post-surgery Michael Jackson.

That same day, at the Radio Disney Awards held in Los Angeles, California, his daughter Janet mentioned her father in her acceptance speech for the inaugural Impact Award, as The Hollywood Reporter noted. "People wonder why I always have children around". "I came out with some kids that everybody loved all over the world".

Michael's dad stood by him during his molestation trial.

U.S. news outlet TMZ was the first to report the news, stating that his wife, Katherine, was at his bedside when he died at 3:30AM in Los Angeles. Joe copped to it but, far from apologizing. he said his methods made his kids successful and kept them out of jail.
