KCK police are reviewing several surveillance cameras that may have captured the incident. Deputy Theresa King, 44, was rushed to University of Kansas Medical Center in critical condition.
The deputies were shot after a suspect overpowered at least one of them and perhaps took a weapon, said Major Kelli Bailiff of the Wyandotte Sheriff's Department said during a press conference.
The shooting occurred outside the courthouse annex, near the area where inmates are transported. He had worked for the department for seven years.
The suspect was also shot during the confrontation in a gated area near the Wyandotte County Courthouse in Kansas City, Kansas.
He said the shooting suspect was critically injured in the shooting and is now in surgery.
"We gather here today with so many emotions coursing through our guts", Alvey said, noting that some of those are "feelings of anger and revenge toward the assailant".
The shooting happened at around 11:40 a.m. Friday.
Colón says he's "very confident it was a last-resort situation to ensure the safety of the public".
Both officers were with the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Department.
The conditions of the deputies' are unknown.
"This incident remains under investigation by the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division, who is encouraging anyone with information to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474- TIPS (8477)", the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office said.
Details of what led to the shooting have not been released.
