Mueller probing Trump's Sessions request

Key Republican Trey Gowdy defends FBI against Trump attacks

Trump has been angry at Sessions for failing to protect him from the DOJ investigation into any links between his presidential campaign and Russian officials, who worked to get Trump elected.

The president used several tweets to quote House Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Trey Gowdy, who appeared on CBS's "This Morning".

Sessions was an early supporter of Trump's campaign and the first sitting senator to endorse his candidacy for president.

Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough insulted President Donald Trump's maturity during an on-air discussion Wednesday by comparing him to a child smearing chocolate on a wall.

"I don't think so, I think what the president is doing is expressing frustration that Attorney General Sessions should have feared these reasons for recusal before he took the job, not afterward", Gowdy said.

"That's why the markets and I think most of the country looks at this and says, "Adam Schiff, you promised an terrible lot and delivered nothing, because there's a big 'nothing-burger" here, '" Chaffetz continued.

Gowdy said he believes Trump would have picked someone else had he known Sessions would step back from that investigation.

It was Sessions who attracted his ire on Wednesday, a day after The New York Times described an angry meeting in Florida previous year when Trump demanded Sessions reverse his decision to step away from Russia-related matters. Some House GOPs sought information on a confidential FBI source who, during the investigation into possible campaign ties to a foreign power, spoke with Trump campaign aide Carter Page, Trump campaign co-chairman Sam Clovis and campaign adviser George Papadopoulos, who pleaded guilty to lying to investigators in October and has been cooperating with special counsel investigators.

In an interview with Sean Hannity on Fox News, Giuliani said Trump "did know about the general arrangement" surrounding the payment, weeks after Trump denied any knowledge. What he inherited from the FBI under Comey was a counterintelligence investigation, focused on the work of Russia's spy services and their outreach to Americans.

According to the Times, special counsel Robert Mueller's interest in the incidents demonstrates that Sessions has an "overlooked role as a key witness" into whether Trump tried to obstruct the special counsel inquiry.

Trump has scaled up his attacks of the Mueller investigation in recent days, including suggesting on Tuesday that Mueller's team would meddle in the midterm congressional elections.

Senate Republicans have defended Sessions, a former colleague, and said it would be hard to get any successor confirmed.

Gowdy told Fox News that he thought Trump should grant an interview to Mueller and his investigators in order to clear all this up.

"When individuals like that are in the orbit of a major political campaign in America, the FBI.should look at people like that", Rubio said.
