Boogie Bomb: Warriors set to add DeMarcus Cousins to lineup

San Antonio Spurs forward Kawhi Leonard celebrates sinking a basket in the first half of an NBA basketball game against the Dallas Mavericks onTuesday Dec. 12 2017 in Dallas

James, fresh off a 3-1 exit in the NBA Finals vs. the Golden State Warriors, has agreed to a four-year, $154 million deal, according to his agent.

Cousins, a four-time All-Star, could meet with the Pelicans and Lakers on Sunday, but it is uncertain if such meetings would take place in person or over the phone.

The Warriors, predictably, were thrilled by a move that gives them a player who averaged 25.2 points last season before getting hurt and has averaged 21.5 points and 11 rebounds for his career.

Cousins is one of the best big men in the National Basketball Association, but is coming off a season-ending Achilles injury he suffered in January while playing for the New Orleans Pelicans.

While waiting for Leonard to become a free agent next summer would allow the Lakers to hold onto their young players, it would leave the door open to a repeat of the scenario L.A. endured with George. After Cousins was spurned by the Pelicans, the Dubs swooped in, stealing him on an incredibly affordable contract that's of little risk to the team-even if Cousins isn't fully recovered from an Achilles tear. He held his basketball camp in Sacramento previous year and also paid funeral expenses for Stephon Clark, who was shot and killed by Sacramento police officers in March.

As now constructed without Leonard, the Lakers are obviously not better than Golden State or Houston, but if they get into the playoffs as a 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th seed, they could face off against several teams in the first round that today look to have a more impressive arsenal: Utah, New Orleans, Oklahoma City, and Minnesota.

The move had been expected for months - OK, maybe more than a year - until ESPN reported Wednesday that pressure was mounting on the L.A. Lakers to acquire Kawhi Leonard in a trade with the San Antonio Spurs before James' June 29 deadline to decline his player option.

"But even if that happens, they still won't beat Golden State", Johnson said.

The only good news for the rest of the league is that Cousins won't be in the lineup until December or January. Durant and Green also jokingly teased Cousins by posting photos on their Instagram account that showed Cousins trying to charge into the Warriors' locker room following an in-game scuffle with Durant last season. One executive said the proposed packages have gotten worse with each round of negotiations, while another said they're flat-out unacceptable.

With the start of free agency upon us, there have been plenty of Lakers rumors.
