"I think just last week in these very halls, we saw an example of the Federal Bureau of Investigation not being trustworthy", he said.
Putin arrived late to their meeting in Helsinki, making Trump wait for him.
After a stormy North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels last week, Trump was accused by critics of prioritising his ties to Putin over the transatlantic alliance.
Yet after the bad-tempered North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit and a contentious trip by Trump to Britain, anxious European leaders will have been relieved if not much came out of the Helsinki meeting.
