Manchester United's Jose Mourinho not confident of new signings before deadline
Aug 10 2018
The uncertain future of Yerry Mina remains up in the air but Jose Mourinho has ruled out a move to bring the Barcelona defender to Manchester United. Ivan Perisic, the Croatia global, also featured prominently on Mourinho's wish list but it now seems that United's summer transfer business will be restricted to the arrivals of Fred, the injured Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant, signed from Stoke City as a third-choice goalkeeper.
Jose Mourinho has made no secret of his disappointment at Man Utd's transfer business so far as they've only signed three players with midfielder Fred the only one considered to be a first team regular.
And with the transfer window closing at 5pm today, time is running out for any new players to sign.
Mourinho was speaking at a 9am press conference and his words did not equivocally rule out the possibility of something happening.
"I am not confident", Mourinho told a news confernece ahead of LeicesterCity's visit to Old Trafford on Friday, the first match of the 2018-19 Premier League season. The Daily Star have reported that the former Republic of Ireland global will instead sign a new deal at Aston Villa.
And I want to see them win the title, but I fear it's going to be very hard for that to happen this season.
Despite slashing a club record £60 million on signing Riyad Mahrez, City have enjoyed a uieter window after spending over £200 million last summer on assembling a squad that smashed a host of Premier League records in romping towards the title.
Mourinho will have to decide whether or not to pick Jesse Lingard, Paul Pogba, Ashley Young and Marouane Fellaini against Leicester after they returned from post-World Cup break on Monday.
United, according to sources, have the funds to complete the deals they want but will not be held to ransom at this late stage of the window.
I think they know they're not really going to be seen as a great team and that Pep is not going to be seen as someone that has dominated English football if he doesn't win two in two or three in three.
"The information I have is no", said Mourinho when asked if he would be adding to his squad. "In Championship Manager you can just press a button". But maybe that is not enough, maybe we need to change certain things.
"Can we win something this season?"
Regardless of who's to blame, the Portuguese boss must now work with the players he's got to achieve a respectable season.
