The controversial Senator McCain, a Vietnam War veteran and former prisoner of war, would be provided a military escort as he embarks on his final journey from Arizona to Washington and will be granted full military honors during a subsequent service at the United States Naval Academy.
Arizona Senator John McCain died on Saturday at the age of 81 following a yearlong battle with brain cancer.
A private ceremony was set for later Wednesday morning at the Arizona State Capitol Museum rotunda, where McCain will lie in state.
Kassandra Morales had already put in three hours waiting on line with her two young children when she spoke to ABC News, and she knew there were many more to come.
Mr McCain was just the third person to lie in state in the Arizona statehouse rotunda over the past 40 years, organisers of the ceremony said.
Ducey said that McCain "brought us above politics", so with "humor and humanity and without compromising the principles he held so dear".
"He believed in something", said Hubbard, who had voted for McCain.
Congresswoman Martha McSally, the Republican establishment favorite, fended off competitive challenges from the far-right to face Kyrsten Sinema, a Democratic congresswoman from Phoenix, setting the stage for one of the most anticipated open-seat Senate elections this year.
"I do understand how many could have misconstrued my comments as insensitive, and for this I apologize", Ward said. "He's crawling the damn walls because they're running story after story on John McCain and he hates it because he's not the center of attention".
Phoenix native Chasity Pullin likewise said that McCain exuded a relatability that drew her to him. McCain's former campaign manager Rick Davis read the letter.
Thursday, his body will be taken to a Phoenix church, where former Vice President Joe Biden will deliver a eulogy during a memorial service.
From there, McCain will depart Arizona for the last time from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.
McCain's lifelong friend and former Congressman Jim Kolbe placed a wreath by his side before Sen.
"Imagining Arizona without John McCain is like picturing Arizona without the Grand Canyon".
