Former PM Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz released on parole

She was diagnosed with lymphoma a year ago, barely a month after Nawaz Sharif was removed from office by the Pakistan Supreme Court after being ordered to face trial in an anti-corruption court.

Pakistan Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, left, accompanied by his wife Kulsoom Nawaz, arrives at the Tribhuwan Airport to attend the 18th summit of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) in Kathmandu, Nepal, Tuesday, November 25, 2014.

After her husband's government was dismissed by General Pervez Musharraf in a military coup and her husband was jailed, Kulsoom took over as the party's President.

Meanwhile, Shehbaz Sharif will leave for the United Kingdom on the next available flight to bring back the body of his sister-in-law.

The prime minister has directed the Pakistan High Commission in London to assist in provision of all necessary facilities to the family of the deceased, news agency PTI quoted his statement.

She would not take to politics again until a year ago, after her husband - now prime minister again - was disqualified by the Supreme Court from holding a public office.

It is pertinent to note that deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and her spouse Safdar, were convicted by an accountability court in the Avenfield reference case on July 6.

Born into a Kashmiri family in Pakistan's Punjab, Kulsoom graduated from the Forman Christian College University.

Begum Kulsoom served as first lady of Pakistan for three non-consecutive terms from 1990-1993, 1997-1999 and 2013-2017.

Nawaz and Kulsoom married in 1971 and had four children - Hassan, Hussain, Maryam and Asma. He said in case the family decides to bury her in Pakistan, the repatriation process may take two or three days.

In her absence, Maryam ran her campaign.

Over the last 30 years, she had stood by her husband and advised him on various government affairs.

Begum Kulsoom led defiant, lonely protests against the Musharraf regime to get her husband freed from prison.

Sharif was ousted from the premiership a month before his wife's diagnosis. Party leaders have also said that she occasionally wrote many of Nawaz's speeches. "May Allah bless the departed soul eternal peace at Heaven-Amen", COAS", he tweeted.
