Melania visits slave castle in Ghana

After Donald Trump's derogatory comment, his wife Melania visits Africa

The ceremony took place in Obama Hall at the Emintsimadze Palace, which was renamed in Obama's honor after his visit in 2009.

"This is a very special place, I will never forget;" America's First Lady told reporters at the Cape Coast Castle. She was welcomed at the airport with dancing and drumming, schoolchildren waving mini US and Ghanaian flags and the gift of a flower bouquet.

First lady Melania Trump tours Cape Coast Castle with museum educator Kwesi Essel-Blankson in Ghana on October 3, 2018.

The first lady's visit to Ghana, Malawi, Kenya and Egypt has been seen as an attempt to carve her own path and emerge from her husband's shadow and his divisive presidency. Samuel Kumah, Chief of Protocol, is standing second from left (AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster).

From the airport, Trump traveled to Accra's Ridge Hospital and watched babies being weighed, part of an initiative funded by the United States to advocate nutrition in children. Essel-Blankson showed the first lady an old cannonball and then escorted her to the "male slave dungeon". Several Ghanaians interviewed said they knew little about it.

That has not stopped Donald Trump from weighing in last week, when he told journalists that his wife was "making a big trip to Africa".

Numerous tweeters noticed the change in her demeanor, with Diane Ethier writing: 'Anyone else notice how happy Melania Trump looks on her SOLO trip?'

"Issues to do with the welfare of children will take centre stage since the two first ladies have similar interests and passion for children", said Juma.

Trump also cradled an infant and declared the baby a "beautiful boy" as she handed him back to his mother. The White House donated a bundle of sacks that would otherwise cost local women $2 each. "Pray for her safety and protection as she goes". It was in a newly constructed hospital wing.

Mrs Trump is in Ghana for a two-day visit.

From there, she met her Ghanaian counterpart, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, at the presidential residence, Jubilee House, where the pair exchanged gifts of an silver Chippendale tray engraved with an image of the White House and Ghanaian kente cloth.

Meanwhile, First Lady Getrude Mutharika returns home Wednesday in time to welcome the US Firs Lady.

Melania Trump opened her first big solo global trip as USA first lady on Tuesday with a wave, a smile and a baby in her arms, aiming to promote child welfare during a five-day tour of Africa.
